Algal Bloom Population Unit Outline

Day 1

Teacher will present PowerPoint of types of producers and during which students will complete graphic organizer/note guide. After students will participate Think Pair Share about Algae. Students will fill out Exit Slip Day 1.

Day 2 Create Lab and data collection chart

Students will participate in a class discussion (class or small groups) about the factors that contribute to the growth of algae (amount of light, temp. nutrient content, acidity, basicity, and light filtration or source). Students will generate possible solutions for how these factors can be tested in the lab. Distribute the student version of the HAB lab. Then they will generate questions and hypotheses and choose the treatment(s) they would like to test in their bioreactor(s). Begin setting up bioreactors. Upon completion, Exit Slip Day 2.

Day 3

Teacher will introduce ebook to students. The students will then read the chapter associated with Harmful Algal Blooms and the Population Unit. Following the completion of the chapter students will participate in an interactive computer game, which includes phylum and species matching game. Upon completion of these tasks students will complete the electronic exit slip for day one. Assign second chapter as homework.

Day 4

Students will collect data during bell work and record their readings and observations on their student HAB lab. Articles about Red Tide Bloom will be distributed to the students in groups. Students will participate in a Jigsaw activity related to their articles. Complete Exit Slip Day 4.

Day 5

Students will collect data during bell work and record their readings and observations on their student HAB lab. Teacher will present PowerPoint about Cause and Effects of HABs with added mitigation. The students will create a foldable for problems and solutions of HABs.

Day 6

Students will collect data during bell work and record their readings and observations on their student HAB lab. Students will complete a CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) based on their findings in the lab.
